We thought it would be fun to use Santa since the PSAs will still be being graded a couple of days before Christmas. Otherwise the same script can be used with a Marketing Director of a mutual fund company who is trying to figure out how to keep his job when redemptions continue to outnumber sales. Santa is concerned because the decline in the number of good children has Prancer organizing a protest against going out to deliver presents on Christmas eve. Prancer doesn’t think the numbers make it worth it. An assistant comes in, asks what he’s doing, and Santa says crunching numbers, they don’t look good and he doesn’t want to lie. Assistant says just put a positive spin on it and you won’t have to lie and shows him how. Santa is pleased with the spin and it will convince the reindeer its worth going out on Christmas Eve. |
Narration Script

(Santa sitting at his desk working on his computer. Santa’s assistant enters.) Assistant: What ya doing Santa? Santa: I’m crunching some numbers for the reindeer. Prancer has organized a protest because he says there are so many bad kids in the world these days that it’s not even worth going out on Christmas Eve. I was trying to prove him wrong, but from what I can tell he’s right. For the last 5 years the percentage of naughty children has steadily increased while the number of nice children has dropped. Asst: Oh Santa, you just have to put a positive spin on it. Santa: I can’t lie to the reindeer. With that nose, Rudolph can smell a lie from a mile away. Asst: That’s the beauty of a “spin” Santa! You don’t have to lie. Here, let me show you. All we have to do is add a couple of variables. (Asst takes the key board and types quickly) Instead of looking at ALL the children in the world, let’s base the calculations on just the children who still believe in you. (Asst says under breath while typing) Let’s see… in 2007 83% believed, 2008…75%, 2009…70, 2010…55, and now 47%. (Santa looks a little bothered by the numbers.) Asst: See? Now, you can honestly tell Prancer and the others that with the exception of a slight dip in 2009, the number of nice children continues to increase year after year. Santa: Ho Ho Ho Narrator: And once again Santa’s little round belly shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! There is a bit of ad-libbing that is not included here. It does not change the overall jist of the PSA. |

EDLD5363 Weeks 3-5 PSA Team Collaboration
Ava Guidry
Sherri Heathcock
Jorge Vazquez
This document is the result of text, email, and phone communications. We were two and then we were three.
Nov 27, 2011
Sherri: Do you have any ideas for the PSA? After hearing the latest 1 out of 10 sixth graders are having sex. I was thinking on a whole different level of safety than those people in the conference.
Ava: Yea. Growing up too fast. I haven’t had anything jump up and bite me yet. I’m open …..
Sherri: I guess we’d better start thinking.
Nov 29, 2011
Ava: Hey there. Have you begun the readings or thought of subject matter for the PSA?
Sherri: I had a very good idea last night, but when I woke up, I couldn’t remember it.
Ava: Okay, then go back to sleep and remember it!
Sherri: Do you have any ideas for the PSA?
Ava: No. Hadn’t put any thought into it. Guess I’d better start. We should concentrate on something we’re familiar with.
Sherri: Can we make it something fun?
Ava: Absolutely! That was my first thought. No matter what it is, make it fun.
Sherri: I’ll try to remember my great idea. Are you by any chance a big bang theory fan? Kate suggested “Death by saggy pants. Cut off the circulation or something.”
Ava: Not a fan but familiar. I like the saggy pants slant.
Sherri: Want to try a three way call? He (Jorge) was thinking about bullying but from a teacher bullying teacher perspective. I said I’d be okay with that if we can make it fun. Then we got on to how to put a positive spin on a negative message in a presentation. Like we’re still going broke, we’re just losing money slower than we were at this time last year.
Dec 2, 2011
Sherri: I have two scripts ready to choose from. If we can get a Santa suit , thought it would be fun to do how to do a positive spin on the naughty and nice list. Otherwise we can just go with a boring marketing director’s presentation to the board. I’ll email a copy of each.
Ava: Okay that’s a go.
Dec 3, 2011
Sherri: Check your email!:-)
Jorge: You sent it to Ava also. I will do the shot list today unless she has some changes. Weeks 4 & 5, you are allowed to revise if you all want some changes. I’ll send you all thew shot list later. Let Ava know we can change weeks 4 and five if she doesn’t agree, but we have a start. Good script.
Ava: I like both. Let’s see if we can take the Santa route. Title? Purpose? I’ve plugged in what we have so far.
Sherri: I’m thinking “There’s always a positive spin” but Jorge may have something in mind. He’s doing the shot list. Purpose... Never give up.
Jorge: Title could be “How to deal with adverse situations”. Purpose: Improve communication skills.
Ava: How to deal, for title. Changing negative thoughts to positive results for purpose?
Sherri: I like that for purpose.
Ava: Title - How to deal with adverse situations. Purpose - There’s always a positive spin; changing negative thoughts into positive results???
Jorge: That sounds better forward to Sherri.
Sherri: That sounds good. Do we need to do a google doc? I don’t see where we have to prove we talked like last week.
Ava: I believe so. I’ll check. If we do we have everything in our texts.
Dec 3
Ava: Send that outline to Jorge. I don’t have his email.
Ava: I really like what you've done. Really explains the shots and there is a variety. It looks good to me. I will look at it again tomorrow with new eyes. I don't remember when the storyboard is to be turned in, but don't sweat it. I will comb the docs we've received for this week and make sure everything is in order for submission. Thanks for a Great job!
Ava: It doesn't have to be a Santa suit. He may be in casual "Santa" clothes. You know suspenders, maybe red or plaid pants. A nicely shaped pillow under an over-sized shirt would work.
Ava: We Rock! You can go ahead and submit if you want. Everything is in order. We will have to submit a google doc in week 5 so I will get started on it for what we did this week so it'll be available for you to make changes and suggestions. Our text messages, emails, and phone calls are the basis. Rock On!
Dec 9, 2011
Ava: Jorge, I think the timing is good. It recorded at 00:01:20. I believe we have to have some voice over. Maybe not for the whole thing but some.
Dec 11, 2011
Jorge: Okay ladies, you called this meeting what do you need.
Sherri: We need to make sure we’re all on the same page and are on track. Do we need to submit anything this week as a team?
Dec 13, 2011
Jorge: This one does not have background music forgot at home will add and send see which one you like. There is still time to make slight changes if needed. I will need the credits to add to the end of the video : I played Santa and Alejandra Manazanares played the elf. Let me know I will be home around 6:30pm. Thank you Ladies.
Dec 14, 2011
Jorge: I was checking the rubics and I had missed some transitions and gradual video shot changes and I added some title clips and credits. See what you all think and let me know the changes today or tomorrow.
Ava: It looks good. We supposedly need a close-up, a wide shot, and a medium shot. The credits need to stay visual for a little longer. Thanks for the "administrative" credit. I will try to remember what we spoke about on the phone Sunday and add it to the collaboration notes. Have you looked them over? I know there are some other conversations or items spoken abut that I may have forgotten. Please let me know.
Jorge: Check your Gmail one more time. If okay, if not let me know what to adjust. Talk later.
I extended the credit time and I think I did have the three shots asked for. I think this covers everything and yes the elf and student was enjoying bouncing Santa around and not like a bowl full of jelly.
If you want any other tweets don’t tell me, no just kidding, if there are any tell me by tomorrow since it is all due on Friday.
Have a good night.
Sherri: I’m going to try to edit the film so that we can shorten the production time closer to a minute and do more voice-over.
Ava: Perhaps we can cut out pulling Santa out of the chair and make part of the shots stills. We may even cut the walk to the desk.
December 15, 2011
Sherri: Here's what I was able to do. The lip sync is good in some places and bad in some. It was pretty good until the video started freezing. I had to cut some frames and insert new ones. :(
Oh and while Audacity will let you change pitch it isn't the most user friendly so the elf now sounds like an elf and Santa may sound a little gay but at least he has some personality now. Give me a call after you've watched.
Jorge: Did you all want any other changes? And, are you okay with the time?
Ava: There is something missing from the title. Do we have all of our credits? Is there a need for a creative commons notation?
Sherri: Here's the revision based on what we talked about last night (clearly stating the message and voice over being over the entire thing). Take a look and see what you think. We can always go back to the original if we want.
Thanks, Sherri
December 16, 2011
Jorge : I am good with the changes that you all suggested for the final production based on the recording of the web conference. The narration changes and the music changed to another song also the extension of the ho ho ho part was better then what I had left there for whatever reason it did not occur to me to split and add an addition piece. You all have done a great job.
Jorge: Sherri do we all upload to YouTube or just one and we share the address.
Sherri: I wondered about that too. Then I thought that it wouldn’t be in our you tube accounts if we did just one. So, I thought we’d probably want to upload individually. And I just added the google dock link to my Wiki page where I embedded the video.
Jorge: Post-Production documentation.
I have had a wonderful time preparing the PSA and most of that is due to the team that I became a part of. The team thinking outside of the box on the typical PSA that is produced and make it more of a seasonal event that conveys the sense that any situation can be spun away from a negative position or situation into a positive situation or position. This can cause people to take a second look at situations that they think are too hard to deal with.
Most of the pieces of the production were pieced to the three team members and the script was submitted promptly and the administration of the time frame was handled by another member and the shot sequence by another. There was a lot of contact between the members discussing the details prior to shooting the scenes and later in the editing of the short clip. Changes were made and approved by all the members in accordance with a review of the assignment details. Final details prior to submission of the PSA were review and rechecked with all of the members.
One of the things that might be considered is the short length of the PSA possibly extending into the two minute range might offer a better opportunity to show what the editing programs can do.
Over all the team was great and again a pleasure to work with, I look forward to working together on future class projects.
Ava: Hey Jorge. I just sent you the final draft of the revised production proposal. I believe I have edited out all of the mistakes.
Yes. It shouldn't take long. No prob. Gotcha.
Jorge: I will get it, Am I suppose to wait for you all to also add you post production to this document. Ok thanks. Be back in few minutes.
Ava: This collaboration has been an eye-opener. It helped me relate to Randy Nelson’s advise regarding making your partner look good and being interested rather than interesting. The distance factor and being gainfully employed presented a little bit of a challenge, but we prevailed. Our product may not be as funny as we anticipated, but I still value the experience. My teammates were supportive and willing to listen to suggestions.
As a suggestion, I agree with Jorge about extending the time, while I understand the need for the time constraint. I was able to view a few other teams’ PSAs and they managed to stay within the 60 seconds. Kudos to them. We consulted at every turn and tried to make sure each was satisfied with changes. This was truly a work of collaboration.

Ava: HEEEY. LOL. What are you 2 doing? Sherri, add in your last note regarding the final version.
Sherri: Ava noticed there was a typo on her name in the credits and while updating the copyright fair use information on the revised pre-production realized the music could only be 30 seconds. I just took 30 seconds and looped it through the whole thing. Let me know if you see anything else...better yet don't! :/
Ava: You’re good. LOL I know it was a task. Thank u from the bottom of my heart. You too Jorge!
Jorge: You all are welcome thanks for letting me in the team its been fun!
Sherri (Reflection): We have a good team. Right off the bat we found that we have similar backgrounds and think alike on many things. The first thing that we all agreed on was that we wanted to make our PSA fun. We assigned tasks based on interests and available equipment. Ave would be in charge of administration. She has kept us on track, making sure that all of our requirements have been met and was in charge of tracking and updating our collaboration. That was a time consuming job in itself. We started the process with text messages back and forth between Ava and I. Then when Jorge joined the group we had our first conversation with him with a conference call. Many texts, emails and calls later, here we are. Jorge volunteered to be the cameraman because he has access to all of the video equipment at his work. He did a great job of filming, and playing, Santa and even had one of his students play the elf. When we watched the "original" final product (we’ve had several) Ava and I began to wonder if we had hit all of the required elements for our PSA. Was our message clear? Not really. Was it ok that it was over 60 seconds? And was the voice over supposed to be over the entire thing or could it just be a line or two? We remembered that Dr. Abernathy had said in one of the web conferences that it was better to be too long than too short. So, we felt we were okay there. However, we could not convince ourselves that we were okay on the other two elements. It was too late to check with Jorge that night so we decided that I would use Movie Maker to see if I could cut the time by a few seconds and then use Audacity to record the voice over lip syncing it (as best I could) to the video. Audacity does allow you to change the pitch of the voice but it’s not the most user friendly thing in the world. Our elf ended up sounding a little like an elf but I was told Santa sounds gay. Oh well, isn't Santa supposed to be happy? It was a very time consuming task. Then I realized I didn’t want to tell Jorge we had edited his work. (I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.) Ava assured me that that’s what collaboration is all about. It was definitely a collaborative effort and I think a good one at that. I agree with my team on extending the time to two minutes and I wish we had more time. The short week made me feel rushed.
